Quick answer: A vocal preset is a saved chain of effects, usually EQ, compression, de-essing, reverb and delay, that you load onto a vocal track in your recording software. Presets give you a fast, consistent starting point, but they do not fix a poor recording. You can use a ready-made preset or build and save your own in Logic Pro or GarageBand.

People search "vocal presets" for three reasons: to learn what they are, to find ones to download and to make their own. This page covers all three, with steps for Logic Pro and GarageBand.
What a vocal preset contains
A preset holds the plug-ins on a channel and their settings. A typical chain looks like this:
- EQ: removes low rumble and mud, adds clarity.
- Pitch correction: optional, from subtle to the hard-tuned effect.
- Compressor: evens out loud and quiet words.
- De-esser: softens sharp S sounds.
- Reverb and delay: add space and mood.
The preset stores plug-in order and values. It does not store your audio or your microphone's character.
Do vocal presets actually work?
They work as a starting point. A good preset gets you most of the way to a balanced vocal in a minute. You still need to set the input gain, move the compressor threshold so it reacts to your voice and balance the effect sends. Presets cannot remove room echo, background noise or clipped recordings, so fix those first.
How to make your own vocal preset
Step 1: Record a clean vocal
Record at 24-bit with peaks around -12 to -6 dBFS. Keep the microphone 10 to 15 cm away and use a pop filter if you have one.
Step 2: Build the chain
Add a high-pass EQ at 80 to 120 Hz, then a compressor at about 3:1, then a de-esser, then a tone EQ. Use our Logic Pro vocal chain guide for the numbers, or the vocal EQ cheat sheet.
Step 3: Add effects on sends
Put reverb and delay on send channels rather than directly on the vocal. Sends keep the dry vocal clear and let you change the effect level without touching the chain.
Step 4: Save it
-
Logic Pro: open the Library, click Save at the bottom, and name the channel strip setting. Files go to
~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Channel Strip Settings. -
GarageBand (Mac): open the Library tab, click Save, and name the patch. Files go to
~/Music/Audio Music Apps/Patches.
Step 5: Test it on a different song
Load the preset on another vocal. If it still sounds good after small gain tweaks, keep it. If it only works for one song, it is a mix, not a preset.
Buy or build?
| Build your own | Ready-made preset | |
|---|---|---|
| Cost | Free | Free to $49, depending on the pack |
| Time | Hours at first | Minutes |
| Learning | You learn how each plug-in works | You can open the chain and study it |

Many producers do both: load a preset, then change it and save the result.

Frequently asked questions
What are vocal presets?
A vocal preset is a saved effects chain for a vocal track. It stores the plug-ins and their settings so you can reuse them.
Can I make money selling my own vocal presets?
Yes, some producers do. Presets built on stock plug-ins sell best, since buyers do not need extra software. Expect to test them and write clear install steps.
Do presets work in GarageBand?
Yes, as patches. Our GarageBand install guide shows how to load them.
Will a preset make my vocals sound professional?
It helps, but a good recording matters more. Use a quiet room, keep the level healthy and treat the preset as a starting point.
