Quick answer: A reggae or dancehall vocal is warm, mid-forward and wrapped in echo. In Logic Pro, use a high-pass near 100 Hz, moderate compression, a warm mid boost and a spring-style or short room reverb. The key effect is a rhythmic delay, often a dotted eighth with higher feedback, thrown in on the ends of phrases. GarageBand follows the same order. Treat every number as a starting point.

This guide covers vocals for reggae, dancehall, dub and Afrobeats-influenced songs, using only the plug-ins that come with Logic Pro and GarageBand.

What defines a reggae and dancehall vocal sound

  • Warm mids. The voice has body around 200 to 800 Hz without sounding boxy.
  • Space for the bass. The vocal stays out of the sub range, since the bassline carries the song.
  • Echo throws. Delay appears on selected words, not on every line.
  • Rhythm first. Delays and reverb follow the one-drop or dancehall riddim.
  • Controlled dynamics. Compression keeps toasting and sung parts even.

The chain in Logic Pro

Order Plug-in Starting point
1 Channel EQ High-pass at 100 to 120 Hz. Light cut of 2 dB near 300 Hz if needed.
2 Compressor 3:1 to 4:1, medium attack, medium release, 3 to 5 dB of gain reduction.
3 DeEsser 2 Around 6 to 8 kHz. Light.
4 Channel EQ (tone) Add 1 to 2 dB near 1 to 2 kHz for forward mids and a small shelf above 8 kHz.

The dub delay

This is the effect that defines the genre. Set it up on a send:

  1. Create a send to Tape Delay or Echo in Logic.
  2. Choose a quarter note or dotted eighth. Start with feedback at 30 to 40 percent.
  3. Filter the repeats: cut below 300 Hz and above 4 kHz so the echo sounds dark and sits behind the voice.
  4. Keep the send at zero for most of the song.
  5. Automate the send up on the last word of a line, then bring it back down. This is the "throw".

Let the echo ring into the gap between lines. If it covers the next line, shorten the feedback.

Reverb

Try ChromaVerb with a short room, or a spring-style preset if one is available, with a decay under 1.2 seconds. Keep it low so the delay stays the main effect.

Fit the vocal around the riddim

  • High-pass the vocal higher than you would for pop, so the bass owns the low end.
  • Leave a pocket in the vocal's 100 to 200 Hz range if the bass is busy.
  • Pan guitar skanks or keys away from the centre to keep the vocal clear.
  • Check the mix at low volume. Dancehall often plays loud, but the words still need to read at low level.

The same sound in GarageBand

  • Use the Echo effect in Smart Controls on a vocal patch, with a note value of a quarter or dotted eighth and feedback near a third.
  • GarageBand lacks dedicated send buses on each track in the same way as Logic, so use a duplicate vocal track as the "throw" track and mute it except on key words.
  • Use the Compressor and Channel EQ in the order above.

Problems that show up with this sound

  • Muddy bass and vocal: raise the vocal's high-pass and cut near 300 Hz.
  • Echo too busy: use throws only on the last word of a phrase.
  • Vocal thin: check the high-pass is not above 130 Hz, and add warmth near 200 Hz.
  • Echo clashes with the beat: make sure the delay is synced to the project tempo.

Frequently asked questions

What delay do reggae vocals use?

A quarter note or dotted eighth delay with moderate feedback, filtered dark, and thrown in on the ends of phrases.

Do I need a spring reverb?

No. A short room or plate works. A spring-style sound adds character if you have it.

How loud should the vocal be against the bass?

The bass is a main feature, so keep the vocal clear but not far above it. Check at low volume.

Does this work for Afrobeats?

The warm mids and rhythmic delays carry over. Afrobeats vocals often use more pitch correction and brighter tops.

Can I do this in GarageBand?

Yes, using the Echo effect and a duplicate track for throws.
